Every Beyond Default script touches AI somewhere. Research, structure, a second opinion on a hook.
And almost every first AI draft gets the same things wrong. Once you can see the pattern, you can work with it instead of against it.
Wrong #1: It writes for the eye, not the ear
AI writes paragraphs that read beautifully and sound terrible out loud. Long sentences, three commas, a semicolon.
A script is spoken. People listen once, at speed, while doing something else. Short sentences. One idea at a time. Room to breathe. I read every line out loud before it survives.
Wrong #2: It tells you the lesson instead of letting you feel it
Ask for a story and AI gives you the moral in the first line, then a story that proves it.
Real storytelling works the other way round. Tension first. The audience leans in because they don't know where it's going. The meaning lands at the end, earned. If the viewer can predict the lesson in second ten, they leave in second eleven.
Wrong #3: It sounds confident about things that aren't true
This one is dangerous. AI will give you a perfect quote, a clean statistic and a date, all delivered with total confidence. Sometimes all three are made up.
My rule: every fact in a script gets checked against a real source before it goes on camera. If I can't find it, it doesn't go in. A great story built on a fake fact is a trap you set for yourself.
๐ก Use AI to find leads. Use real sources to confirm them.
Wrong #4: Every hook is the same hook
"What if I told youโฆ" "Here's the truth nobody talks aboutโฆ" "This changes everything."
These hooks are the most likely hooks, so they are everyone's hooks. A good hook is specific: a strange detail, a real number, a moment of tension. AI can generate twenty options. I usually keep none of them and write the twenty-first myself, but the twenty show me what to avoid.
Where AI is genuinely brilliant
Research: finding angles, sources, counter-arguments and questions I hadn't thought of.
Structure: testing whether the story has a beginning, middle and turn, and where the energy drops.
Options: giving me ten ways to say something so I can see the shape of the best one.
Speed: turning a two-day research process into a two-hour one.
The split
AI does the library work. I do the storytelling.
That split is the whole job of a Creative AI Operator. Not "AI wrote my script". AI made me faster at the parts that don't need me, so I can spend my time on the parts that do.
